Teamwork

The debacle (if you are a Bama fan) that was the Bama/Auburn game last week has caused me to think about what makes a great team. If you watched the game, you will know what I am talking about. Auburn came back from a 24-0 deficit to win 28-27! How did that happen? I, like all Bama fans, am still shaking my head over that one. I have never played college football of course, but I asked a friend, who recently played on a National Championship team for Texas this: how could one team, with loads of talent, great coaches, and the crowd behind them, look so dominant in one half of a game and seem to roll over and be overwhelmed in the 2nd half? How could the other team look so bad, and almost get blown out of the stadium in the 1st half, and then come back and take the game in the 2nd half – in a hostile environment?  What was the difference between the two teams? What gave Auburn the edge over Bama in this one? Well, here are some things that I come up with that will set any type of team apart from the rest of the pack and bring success-even in ministry teams. And, now that I think of it, these characteristics, which are present on Auburn’s team this year, were present on last year’s National Championship Team for Alabama. What a difference a few months a few different players make.

#1) Team Chemistry – Auburn certainly had that this year

#2) Determination – A never give up, never say die attitude

#3) Passion – Putting your heart and soul into preparation and every play in the game

#4) Ability to make adjustments during the game (adaptability) – Saban and his staff were certainly out-coached in this area

#5) Perseverance – Against the odds, obstacles, and distractions, keep playing to win

#6) Quiet Confidence – Gene Chizik certainly displayed that this year

#7) Working for a greater cause – A chance to play for a National Championship was on the line for Auburn

#8) Momentum – Even though Auburn was down – they created their own momentum with big plays, on both sides of the ball, which boosted their confidence and deflated Alabama.

Alabama certainly had some of these characteristics on its team this year but not all of them. A successful team, in any arena of life, should have each of these qualities in order to reach its full potential. Congrats to Auburn and good luck to your team!
